How I Stay Safe

How I Stay Safe is an injury prevention program focused on increasing awareness on ways to prevent injury. Students between 4-12 years old create a drawing on how they stay safe. Children are asked to think about safety issues at home, on the road and at school. Then, they draw a picture on how to prevent injury. These pictures are entered into a drawing contest. The goal is to promote injury prevention throughout Harlandale and San Antonio Independent School Districts. The contest helps teachers include injury prevention into their curriculum.

Children entering the contest are divided into three age groups, 4-6, 7-8, and 9-12. Each age group has a first, second, third and honorable mention winner. The top drawings win a prize and the winner’s drawings are placed in the following year’s How I Stay Safe Calendar. A ceremony is held at the end of the school year. Children receive prizes like bicycles with helmets, Missions baseball tickets, Spurs memorabilia, Alamo IMAX movie tickets, and gift cards.
